VISION

Ginger Watkins Studio is an innovator in sustainable building design and energy
efficiency consulting. We work with clients, architects, contractors, developers and
institutions to bring about cost-effective, ultra low-energy buildings and natural systems.
Out of respect for resources and delight in the uniqueness of each site, Ginger Watkins
Studio uses a rigorous, collaborative and integrative approach to whole systems design,
crafting elegant and lasting solutions.
It is eminently achievable to build and renovate our homes, schools and businesses to
use 70-80% less energy using technology that is available now. Since buildings use 49% of
the energy and 76% of all electricity generated by power plants in the U.S., widespread
application of the 2030 Challenge and the Passive House standard would have a
significant impact on energy conservation, climate change, public health, and
community resiliency. At the same time, it would help to keep electric rates affordable
by offsetting demand for new power plants and would make dramatic contributions to
public health through reduced power emissions. When monetized, the public health
benefits of even the smallest Passive House exceed the cost of the house itself.

PASIVE HOUSE
A Passive House TM is a comprehensive system. The combination of a high-performing
building envelope with copious amounts of insulation, triple pane windows, no thermal
bridges, a well defined and installed air-tight layer and an efficient whole-house
ventilation system makes it possible to heat a house or other building type primarily with
the sun’s rays, heat from people and waste heat from appliances. The remainder can be
met by a tiny HVAC system. Building owners, in turn, invest in the building itself, the high
performance envelope, and make smaller outlays for HVAC system installation and
replacements.

Passive HouseTM homes, schools and businesses are more affordable to build and own
than conventional construction. In the face of energy cost rise and instability, their
predictable energy bills provide economic security, especially for those with flat budgets
and fixed incomes. They have the added benefits of superior indoor air quality and
comfort. Ginger Watkins Studio is committed to the 2030 Challenge and focuses on
Passive House-level and net zero energy design and construction. We enjoy
collaborating, listening incisively, and considering the entire system to take advantage of
